Invest in your story
Many videographers who say they “shoot film” do so as a branding gimmick. You’ll see promo images of them holding cute Super 8mm cameras and they might sprinkle a few rolls of Super 8mm into mostly digital final product. Why? Because shooting a bit of film on a tiny Super 8mm camera is easy and looks ‘artistic’. But most lack the commitment to the craft of film cinematography required to document an event almost exclusively on film. For instance, shooting a few film shots of a ceremony you’re capturing primarily on video requires only one film camera, whereas shooting a ceremony on 16mm film requires four cameras and a dedicated film loader. At Cinema 16, we know that real film makes a real difference. Film is our primary artistic medium (not an afterthought) and we endeavor to create a mostly film final product. It’s tougher and more expensive, but absolutely worth it.
Work with the original
If you resonate with a film aesthetic, look no further. Paul pioneered shooting weddings on film, raising the aesthetic bar for the entire videography industry. You can read the story in the NY Times, but here’s Paul in his own words:
“Videography has become too polished and distracted by the idea of creating a showreel for resort properties and vendor design details. I’m not mad at an occasional drone shot and some design highlights but I’m drawn to documenting moments of real human interaction.
I make films that tell your story within the context of the people you love. I strive to capture the human heart in motion. Paired with the right song it goes something like this.
Twenty years later, 16mm film is still my creative weapon of choice because it most effectively transmits the essence of my subjects to the soul of the viewer. If my work moves you and you want to learn more, please reach out. I’d love to connect and explore what you have in mind.”
